  • BEING D-U-M IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY

Being D-U-M (i.e. absentminded, forgetful) in any country can have bad results.  Being D-U-M in a foreign country?  More frustrating because you can't admit how D-U-M you're being (because I find it makes me feel better if I say to someone "I'm being D-U-M!").

Yesterday, I was in a taxi, going to the post office when I realized I had forgotten my wallet.   So I tried to explain to the driver that I had forgotten it.  He agreed to turn back but only if I gave him about three times the normal fare.  Then, as he was about to turn around, he got pulled over by a cop and got a ticket. OOPS.

Then, as I was going home from work, also in a taxi, I left my cell phone in the taxi.  I called it as soon as I realized what had happened, asking the guy to bring it back and he agreed but for a price, of course.  I had to make at least 2 more phone calls before he was close enough to where I lived to drop it off again. ("hello?  Are you near yet?" "no, 20 more minutes" "okay" ... "hello?  Are you near yet?" "no, 10 more minutes" "okay").  He came back about and hour and a half later, laughing at me.  I sheepishly grabbed my phone, gave him the money, and he drove off.  Thankfully, he didn't make any personal calls on the phone.

The lesson?  If you're going to be D-U-M, do it in your own country.

  • haha! isn't it spelled D-U-M-B???

  • i say this too! (did we ever say this to each other?)  my version: "arg, I'm D-U-M dumb!"

  • oh and gnu -- i don't know about ahrim, but i deliberately misspell it to emphasize just how dumb i was.

  • Hey, Ahrim unni!

I'm NEVER going to be "too hip" for you!

    I go back tomorrow.

    I can't believe it!~

I miss you a lot and I can't believe I'm not going to see you for so long!

  • OH!  i thought that there must be something behind it.  haha

  • Wow. I totally admire your language talent... You must be speaking pretty good "Uzbek" by now. I like your profile pic! So..."Ahrim"!

  • Hey Ahrim!  That's funny on multiple levels.  Maybe you should be happy you were D-U-M in Uzbek...  Can you imagine if you left your phone in a NY cabbie???  On a different note, I'm still a little weirded out by blogging (I'm very slowly coming around to the 21st century) and on occasion I worry about providing too much info for fear of internet psychos.  My guess is that you probably don't have to worry about that as much living in the land of the Uzbeks...  Btw, love the hat.  What is it made of?  Can I get one at our local Wal-Mart (the biggest store in our town)?
