  • Extracurricular Activities

Most of you know that I am getting a bit ti-red of my desk job, so it's nice to be able to do some things that are development-related but allow me to get my flat a** out of my chair and office!

    Candles
Any of my Xanga peeps ever made candles?  My friend and I have been experimenting with making them for
a possible income generation project.  We buy these pillar candles for less than $.10 each...

    Melt them...

(pretty fancy way to melt, eh?)
Pour them into these molds with some scent...

    And voila!

    Greenhouse
Any of my Xanga peeps ever made a greenhouse? We want to build a greenhouse in our office backyard; and grow and sell veggies that are not available here (yet).    So we went to visit a few families with greenhouses about 45 minutes outside of Tashkent.  They were able to build them courtesy of a microcredit loan from another NGO.

We were impressed!!!  This is parsley.

This is broccoli, which is not eaten by locals but by foreigners.

I bought me three bunches.   This woman came out with her knife, I picked out three bunches, and she cut them for me.    Now that is some FARMER FRESH broccoli!  I boiled half of one and froze the rest.

And my favorite animal in the whole world....

  • I was trying to figure out if by favorite aminal you meant the Uzbek woman or the donkey, since the caption came between the two - I'm an ignoramus, what can I say!

Why don't the locals understand broccoli?! The pastor in Dushanbe has been trying to grow bananas for years, in a greenhouse, with no success - any advice?

  • Lana is the Uzbek Martha Stewart. She would be so proud. That lady looks oddly like Duke.

  • broccoli is yummy.

  • awesome pics. i like the donkey.

    you celebrating thanksgiving?

  • awesome candles!

  • that is so so so cool.  especially the greenhouse project.  you are too cool, lana.  really :)   and I don't think your butt is flat at all.  rather nice, like our mommas'.

  • that's a lot of broccoli!

  • i think i made a candle as a school project once, visiting some colonial village.  mine was lumpy because we didn't use a mold - we dipped a long string into a tall container of wax over and over until it got thick enough around the middle to look sort of like those pillar candles you show at the top.  yours are so professional looking!

  • wow, the candle thing is sooooooooo cool...so how do you get scent in there? you should make a kimchi candle...hehehehehehe...
oh, and that little ass (boston lingo) is sooooo cute!!!! have a happy thanksgiving in Uzbek, lana!

  • I made candles before when I was a kid... I still like melting wax... some kind of addiction. However, I have never built a greenhouse... which looks like a huge candle when it is lite - pretty. I think it will be fun. Bigger people should do bigger things...

  • OH MY GOSH!!! I too LOVE donkeys!!!! they are so adorable!!!

  • wow that's cool. I wonder if I can build a mini greenhouse in my nyc apt? :) fresh veggies, yum!
did you use beeswax? beeswax smells great and burns slowly so there's less smoke ;)
