  • How do I-bankers do it??

City employees don’t often have to work 12 hour days. But the last few days, I’ve been working 12 hours a day to get a proposal done.  This is partly because my boss gets in at 6am, and after 8am, he’s constantly bombarded… so if I want to get ANY time with him, I have to be there by 7am.

I’ve only had to this a few days. How the HECK do I-Bankers work from 6am – 12am every day for weeks????

  • NJN

So… my new roommate, just for the next few days (’cause I’m movin’) brought these into our toiletries repertoire:

Not a big deal.. except…this person is MALE.   So funny.

Also, my sister has a good friend,
who upon entering into my sister’s apartment
    after being
outside in the hot sun all day,
    flopped down on the couch,
    reached into his manpurse,
    TOOK OUT A COMPACT,
and proceeded to powder his nose.

As both of these guys are more “feminine” than I am…

Some of the best NON-crude ones I’ve read so far:

Her People Love Fashion at a Bargain

    Older woman: Excuse me, miss?
    Younger woman: Yeah?
Older woman: Your veil, your burqa is very beautiful. I didn’t know your people were allowed to wear it in bright colors.
Younger woman: It’s not a burqa, it’s a poncho. I’m Jewish. It’s for the rain. I got it at TJ Maxx.

  • Rapping

In the last week, I have TWICE been in a car where a young man was rapping, out loud, with headphones on.

One guy was kind of loud… and was rapping along with a song…. with motions…

But the second guy was listening to some beats and it looked like he was singing his OWN lyrics, which he had written on his little mini… computer.. dealie.. (I am not up on the TECH-MO-LOGY so I have no idea what that thing is called)… what’s funny is that I am sitting next to him, reading the NY Times… I’m dressed for work.. he’s dressed for school (a young stylish black guy)… and as I read the paper, I bob along with his beats… he’s quietly mouthing the lyrics, scrolling on this mini-computer, going back.. starting over again… practicing…

I wonder what he was rapping about?

EDIT: the thing he was using was not an IPOD because there were also words scrolling on it. it was something like this:

  • Work and Jemaine

So far, I am enjoying my job … I kind of feel like I’m back in grad school – writing reports and papers – but these reports and papers will help make some significant changes… hopefully.

At my job, there is a clear generational gap… there are the old school bureacrats who are cynical about everything and don’t trust anyone; and then there are people like me – still idealistic; still wide-eyed; still hopeful for all the improvements that can be made…

Old school bureacrats HATE the words strategic planning, reports, and databases.

My job is mostly… strategic planning, reports, and databases.

  • Congratulations Tina and Patrick!

I went to my fourth and final wedding of 2007 this past Saturday.  But first, one pic from the shower.
Tina and I were in small group before I left for Uzland.  She is a wonderful woman and VERY modest.
So of course, I HAD to get her lingerie.  I won’t post pics of it here, but I have to say that I got her VERY
modest lingerie. But here was her reaction anyway:

On to the wedding, held at the gorgeous and majestic Riverside Church:

By the way, I want the guy in this technicolor dreamcoat to officiate at my wedding as well:

    tina-altar

There must have been a LOT of people praying for this wedding, because for some reason,
it was one of the most touching services I’ve been to in a long time.. (and I don’t even know the groom)

    An exUBerant Tina…

The food at this wedding was SPEC-tacular.  The apps included raw oysters; shrimp; lobster; sushi; tuna tartare; roast beef…
Here’s the first course when we finally sat down for dinner!

Finally, I really liked the favors we got:

Unless someone decides to get married in a few months unexpectedly, I am DONE with weddings this year!
(note: and I wore the same dress to ALL four weddings, since NONE of them were related at all)

  • Relationship with my boss

One of the reasons why I enjoy my job: ()

(In a meeting with my boss and a coworker.)
Coworker:(to my boss) So, do you have that document?
Boss: Yeah, I have it.. somewhere.
Me: (covering the side of my mouth that my boss is on and whispering to the coworker) You’re better off asking someone else for it.

Boss, noticing what I’ve said, FLICKS ME OFF.  We all laugh.

    The end.

  • The wonderful adventures surrounding the Michigan Wedding of the Year!

Millions of hearts broke on August 12th, 2007, when David S, Michigan Class of 1997′s “coolest” bachelor, married the lovely and beautiful Kim C. in Oakland, California:

    kim-and-dave-walking-in

But first, you have to read about (okay, you can skip down if you want) the adventures of this blogger before the wedding:

My trip to Oakland started on Saturday morning (Aug 11th) at 1:30am in Midtown Manhattan. This is when I left janieyoon’s apartment (after a fun evening with her). I headed to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, hoping to catch a bus to Newark Airport.

I get there – no bus. No biggie – it’s still early – so I walk over to Penn Station, hoping to catch a train. No trains. So I roam around Penn Station, trying to think of a Plan C. Suddenly, it hits me—the PATH! I take the subway to the PATH station – take the PATH to Newark Penn station – and then take a cab. I get to Newark with plenty of time to spare for my 5:30am flight.

After a stopover in Houston, I get to Oakland around 11:00am (going East to West is always nice as you gain time!). My dear friend and longtime accountability partner jencliu picks me up and we head to brunch. I am delirious, as I haven’t had much sleep in the last 24 hours… so afterwards, we head to her apartment and I take a nap. After the nap, we go to Circuit City*, then Japantown (AWESOME!), and finally, we end the evening by seeing Becoming Jane, which I really liked (Anne Hathaway was REALLY good).

    * Interjection: The digital camera I wanted wasn’t available anywhere in Manhattan, and it was too late to order on-line for delivery, so I decided to try the “order online and pick it up at a store” option. I found a store in SF – on Van Ness street – that had my desired camera – the Canon Powershot A710IS (a bit bulky but with great features like 6x optical zoom and image stabilization) – and ordered it. Well, when we get to the Circuit City, the camera is not there. The very helpful and efficient manager, Nesh, calls around and finds the camera in stock at another store. He asks the manager of that store to physically find the camera and hold it for me. And he also gives me a $24 gift card!

The next morning, Sunday, we head to City Church for a great service. I loved the music and the sermon! I run into my old NYC friend Bradley and his wife, Barbara. Then I eat lunch with Jencliu and her family – bro, sis-in-law, two nieces, one nephew, and the sis-in-law’s friend. Jencliu then drives me to Oakland Airport where I pick up my rental car and head to the Circuit City where my camera is, indeed, waiting for me! Despite traffic (on a Sunday afternoon? WHAT the heck?)… and two bouts of being lost (TERRIBLE road signs), I make it to the hotel by 3:15, get dressed in 20 minutes, and three other guests and I are headed to the church for the ceremony (the sister of the groom, also fellow UMicher, gnusharas, had warned us NOT to be late..)…

    … and finally… pics from the wedding…

The ceremony was held at a church with a lovely view..

… the ceremony was officiated by David’s uncle (who was HI-larious) and was EXTREMELY short…(but very nice)…

This is the smallest wedding I’ve ever been to, with only 50 guests total.
Here is the friends photo. There’s about 25 of us here. The other 25 were all David’s family!

The reception was held in a tent on a golf course next to the Oakland Airport.
    It was really pretty.

    The favors… aren’t they precious?

One of the “BEST”-est parts of the night was seeing a certain sister of the groom get a bit…
    D.R.U.N.K.
She says she wasn’t, but these pictures say otherwise…

“yes, my cheeks are usually this hot and flushed… and my hands are always flailing about..”

    “no, seriously.. I’m not d.r.u.n.k.!!”

    “… okay… maybe.. just a little…”

    Congrats, David and Kim!!!!

To end the adventure, I stayed up on Sunday night after the wedding as well, since my flight out of Oakland was at 6am.  I fell in and out of sleep from 2 – 3:30am… and then arrived at the airport by 4:30am.  I arrived back into Newark by 7:15pm  (via Houston) and then was back in my apartment (via Air Train + NJ Transit + Subway) by 10:00pm (after eating chicken at a local restaurant). I fell into bed before 11:00pm and was up by 7:30 or so for work this morning.  So this weekend, over three nights, including plane rides, I got, at most, around 14 hours of sleep.  But it was worth it!

Final pic, stolen from gnusharas’ site — GOOO BLUE! (I actually look a bit d.r.u.n.k here myself… but I’m not)

  • Almost got scammed!

Jelly, Jelly’s coworker, and I were just outside of the MoMA, walking on the sidewalk when I VERY SLIGHTLY bump a man.  I turn around to find that his food is now spilled all over the sidewalk.  It’s a mess of chicken and noodles.

I think to myself  “I barely even nudged the guy!” but now the guy and his partner are making a scene… “OH no, that’s my DINNER right there… that cost me $12!”… etc, etc…

Not knowing what to say, I say “sorry.  okay, we can go and get your some more food”. He says “no, no, I can’t walk.. My leg is hurting” and meanwhile, his friend is muttering “just give us the money and we’ll go buy it ourselves”.  In the meantime, he’s scooping the food back up into the container. Jelly gets involved, asking “where did you get it?  come ‘on, we can go together and get you some more food”… but the guys refuse.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a guy in a polo shirt comes out and says “hey guys, let’s not make a scene” and pulls out $10, which he gives to the guys. We walk away.

Jelly informs me that this was a classic scam and thank God the two of them were there with me, ’cause I totally would’ve fallen for it!  He said he’s almost been scammed before in Times Square – someone tries to accuse him of breaking their glasses.

Now I think that it’s really ridonk that people pull these scams, but I can just imagine some tourists (or, ahem, some nice and compassionate transplanted New Yorkers) falling for this. Maybe these guys thought we were tourists, but after they found us being less-than-sympathetic, they gave up a bit.  We’re still a bit confused about the guy in the polo shirt — was he part of the scam?  If so, how?  Where did he come from, anyway?
